1.0 Background information
Egerton University is one of the 12 Universities Implementing Transforming African Agricultural Universities to meaningfully contribute to Africa’s Growth and Development (TAGDev 2.0) program. This 10-year initiative (2023 – 2033) is a collaboration between the Regional Universities forum for capacity building in Agriculture (RUFORUM), Mastercard Foundation, the Global Confederation of Higher Education Associations for Agriculture and Life Sciences (GCHERA) and 12 African Universities. The program aims at strengthening institutions to serve the communities by empowering young women and men and their institutions to drive an inclusive, equitable, climate resilient and transformative agriculture and Agri-Food systems.
As part of transformation of Agri-food system, TAGDev program at Egerton University is implementing the Agrifood Systems and Entrepreneurship project aimed at validating and disseminating 15 Climate Smart Agricultural Technologies Innovation and Management Practices (TIMPs) that will impact 68,500 smallholder farmers, strengthening at least 6 farmer’s co- operatives, planting 950,000 trees, training 5,000 out of school youths, support establishment of 75 start-ups and engaging 25,000 young women and men to expand their work opportunities in the agrifood system.
The program therefore seeks to engage an agricultural extension intern to support in delivery of program activities as highlighted below:
Position: Agricultural Extension Intern

Duration: 6 months (with a possibility of renewal based on performance)
2.0 Position Summary
The intern will support the Agrifood Systems and Entrepreneurship Consortium (ASEC) project under TAGDev 2.0, with a focus on the management of the model farm. The role will involve coordinating demonstration and research activities on root and tuber crops, supporting farmer training events, and engaging with communities to enhance knowledge transfer and adoption of improved agricultural practices.
3.0 Duties and Responsibilities
Support the daily management and operation of the model farm, including its demonstration and research components.
Assist in setting up and managing trials and demonstrations for root and tuber crops.
Support the organization and facilitation of farmer training events, including planning logistics and providing technical backstopping
Document and report on model farm activities, farmer training sessions, and community feedback
Contribute to the preparation of technical reports, progress updates, and knowledge products
Work closely with project staff, researchers, extension officers and ASEC partners to ensure effective knowledge sharing with farming communities
Perform any other duties relevant to the project as may be assigned by the Program Coordinator.
4.0 Requirements and Competences
Completed Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture or Agricultural Education and Extension studies at Egerton University not earlier that 2024 with a minimum qualification of an Upper Second Class Honours.
Demonstrated experience in community engagement and farmer training or extension activities.
Strong understanding of the needs and challenges of farming communities.
Basic knowledge of research and demonstration methods in crop production, particularly for root and tuber crops.
Excellent organizational, facilitation, and communication skills.
Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
Proactive, innovative, and adaptable to dynamic program needs.
