Building Practical Competence in Soil Testing and Analysis among AHITI Nyahururu Students

On 15th October 2025, the ASEC Project, under its Technical Skills Transfer component, conducted a training session on Soil Testing and Analysis for students from AHITI Nyahururu College at Nyandarua National Polytechnic (NyNP). The session brought together 44 students (30 males and 14 females) for an intensive learning experience designed to strengthen their technical capacity in soil science and sustainable agricultural practices.

The training combined both theoretical and practical sessions, focusing on soil sampling techniques, testing procedures, nutrient analysis, and interpretation of results. Through these hands-on exercises, students gained a deeper understanding of how soil health directly influences crop productivity and were introduced to environmentally sustainable soil fertility management practices.

The initiative successfully enhanced the capacity of future agricultural officers and soil technicians, equipping them with applied skills essential for professional agricultural service delivery. It also provided a valuable platform for field-based learning under the ASEC framework, fostering collaboration between training institutions and practical industry applications. Positive feedback from both students and faculty underscored the relevance of the training, with calls for similar sessions to be held regularly.

Despite the overall success, a few challenges were noted, including limited soil test kits for group practice and rain-related delays that affected some outdoor activities.

The training effectively supported ASEC’s objective of building practical competencies in agricultural service delivery. To sustain and scale such impactful learning experiences, there is a need to equip AHITI with adequate field tools and resources to facilitate future training sessions.
