On 10th October 2025, the ASEC Project conducted a Tree Planting Sensitization activity at Mwiteithia Primary School in North Kinangop under the Environmental Sustainability component. The event brought together pupils, teachers, and members of the local community in a joint effort to promote environmental protection and climate-smart agricultural practices.
A total of 500 fruit trees, including mango, avocado, and passion varieties, were planted within the school compound. The exercise aimed to encourage agroforestry, enhance soil fertility and water conservation, and provide long-term nutritional benefits for the school community.
Beyond the physical planting, participants were sensitized on the broader importance of tree planting in mitigating climate change and supporting sustainable livelihoods.
Among the key achievements was the successful planting and tagging of all 500 trees for monitoring and follow-up care. The school administration also committed to maintaining the trees and integrating the initiative into its learning programs to build environmental awareness among pupils. The surrounding community expressed appreciation for the initiative and showed increased understanding of how trees contribute to ecosystem health and resilience.
However, the activity faced a few challenges, notably concerns over consistent watering during the dry season and the need for additional soil conditioning in some planting areas to ensure healthy growth.
The tree planting event significantly advanced ASEC’s climate-smart agriculture and environmental sustainability objectives while actively engaging youth and the community in environmental stewardship. Continued technical and logistical support for tree maintenance will be essential to ensure the long-term success and impact of this initiative.
