TAGDev 2.0 program at Egerton University on February 3, 2025, engaged Deans, Directors, and Chairs of Departments in a strategic forum to discuss ways to strengthen academic, research, and policy interventions for improved graduate outcomes and institutional resilience
 
The discussions were aimed at identifying institutional opportunities and actionable strategies that would ensure the university remains responsive to the changing industry and societal needs. Key areas such as curriculum alignment, graduate completion rates, policy development and implementation, inclusion & equity, research & extension services and institutionalizing entrepreneurship were discussed during the meeting.

The TAGDev 2.0 Program, Egerton University is privileged to be among the key partners supporting the adoption of Competence-Based Education (CBE) in higher education institutions across East Africa. Currently, a four-day training is underway at Egerton University to equip academic staff with the necessary skills and understanding to transition to CBE and to fast-track the adoption CBE across different academic programs. Speaking during the opening of the workshop, Prof. Charles M’Erimba, representing TAGDev 2.0 Program Coordinator Prof. Nancy Mungai, described the training as a “critical step toward reimagining higher education to remain not only academically rigorous but also contextually relevant and impact-driven.”

TAGDev 2.0 Program, Egerton Universitycohort 1 Environmental Science students participated in the transformative Environmental Conservation Summit at Egerton University. This gathering brought together passionate minds, including Egerton staff and students from various faculties, representatives from Nakuru County’s Department of Water, Energy, Climate Change & Environment, and students from JKUAT and Kabarak University.
The summit sparked critical discussions on sustainable practices, solid waste management, and climate action. The TAGDev students launched their innovation whereby they have repurposed waste bathtubs around the university into eco-friendly outdoor benches which can be used by students for during group discussions

Egerton University’s TAGDev 2.0 Cohort 1 students today 7th May 2025, were involved in a transformative psycho-social support session organized by the program aimed at enhancing emotional resilience, promoting psychological well-being, and equipping students with effective stress management strategies as they navigate academic and personal pressures. The training held at the TAGDev Centre not only focused on academic excellence but also emphasized the psychosocial welfare of students. This approach recognizes that for students to truly excel, especially in a university environment that often presents a lot of challenges, their mental and emotional health must be prioritized.

Good afternoon, and on behalf of Egerton University, I warmly welcome you to this TAGDev Side Event taking place alongside the Kenya National Research Festival 2025. We are deeply honoured to host this gathering under the festival’s theme “Sustainable Agriculture and Food Security: Empowering Communities through Research, Science, Technology and Innovation.”

Egerton University together with the Transforming African Agricultural Universities to meaningfully contribute to Africa’s Growth and Development (TAGDev 2.0) Program hosted a National Forum during the Kenya National Research Festival 2025 under the theme “Accelerating Transformative Education through Multi-Stakeholder Dialogue and Collaboration.” The forum convened government leaders, universities, TVETs, private sector actors, and development partners to chart new pathways for agricultural education in Kenya and Africa.
The Vice Chancellor Prof. Isaac Kibwage, emphasized the urgency of re-engineering farming practices to ensure food security, climate resilience, and youth employment. He noted that training must go beyond theory, equipping young farmers with competence-based skills, entrepreneurial mindsets, and the ability to adapt to changing agrifood systems, calling for mechanized farming and systemic reforms to dismantle exploitative cartels in agriculture.

Egerton University is one of the 12 African Universities implementing Transforming African Agricultural Universities to Meaningfully Contribute to Africa’s Growth and Development (TAGDev 2.0) program for the period between 2023-2033. TAGDev 2.0 is a collaboration program between Mastercard Foundation, the Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture (RUFORUM), the Global Confederation of Higher Education Associations for Agricultural and Life Sciences (GCHERA), and 12 African universities. This transformative initiative is designed to equip and empower young women and men and their institutions to foster inclusive, equitable, and resilient socio-economic development within their communities. To achieve this goal, TAGDev Program has partnered with the university in reviewing and developing policies aimed at enhancing a conducive environment for the delivery of transformative education.

Today 23rd September 2025, RUFORUM convened Business Development Officers from 14 universities (and their affiliate TVETs)  implementing the TAGDev 2.0 program for an exposure visit at the TAGDev 2.0 Centre hosted at Egerton University, Kenya. The visit brought together participants from Uganda, Kenya, Benin, Morocco, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Ethiopia, Cameroon, Malawi, Ghana, and South Africa, who engaged in knowledge sharing, peer learning, and joint reflection on how African universities are strengthening their innovation and incubation ecosystems. Lessons from the visit were aimed at informing actions on how institutions could effectively deliver business development services to students, communities, and industry partners.

Farmers Embrace Innovation at Egerton University’s TAGDev 2.0 Model Farm Field Day

On Thursday, 3rd July 2025, the Transforming African Agricultural Universities to Meaningfully Contribute to Africa’s Development (TAGDev 2.0) Program at Egerton University hosted a  Farmers’ Field Day at its Model Farm. The event benefitted 55 farmers from across Njoro Sub-County. The focus was on bridging the gap between research and practice, offering hands-on exposure to affordable, climate-smart Technologies, Innovations, and Management Practices (TIMPs) that smallholder farmers can adopt to enhance productivity and climate resilience.

Egerton University  is excited to announce the selection of its second cohort of students under the TAGDev 2.0 program – a transformative initiative in partnership with the Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture and Mastercard Foundation.

Egerton University places inclusion at the heart of its mission, recognizing that true transformation in higher education must embrace diversity in all its forms. Through the TAGDev 2.0 Program, the University has deliberately created opportunities for young women and men who are often marginalized, including refugees and differently-abled persons, alongside those from disadvantaged communities.

Egerton University together with the University of Eldoret, hosted a Joint Orientation for the 2025 cohort of TAGDev 2.0 scholarship beneficiaries. The three-day program, held from September 12–14, 2025, at the CoELIB Centre, Egerton University, brought together 64 first-year students alongside university leadership, facilitators, and alumni.
The orientation was designed as a structured onboarding program to prepare students for academic success while instilling values of entrepreneurship, leadership, and community service. Over the three days, students were introduced to key sessions covering personal mastery, psychosocial support, financial literacy, entrepreneurship, community engagement, and the pursuit of excellence.
